In 2026, after nearly 90 years, the Institute of Design was folded into Illinois Tech's School of Design & Society.
This website is an archive of the impactful and inspirational work produced by the ID community before that transition.

László Moholy-Nagy opened the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1937, treating design as a discipline that was teachable, testable, and consequential. Nine decades on, its scope had widened from the things people use to the systems they depend on: hospitals, government agencies, classrooms, supply chains, digital platforms. Along the way, ID community members developed the published research, methods, and frameworks that designers rely on every day.

Chief among them is human-centered design: close attention to how people actually live, and advocacy for what that research reveals. It shaped designers who are comfortable with complexity and ambiguity: curious, rigorous, inclusive, and stubbornly optimistic about design's ability to change the systems that shape our lives.

To every one of them, who taught, studied, built, critiqued, and stayed late in the studio: thank you, and keep designing.

Victor Lo Chung-Wing

Chairman and CEO, Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Limited

Victor Lo is the chairman and chief executive of the Hong Kong-listed Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Limited, the holding company of an Asian multinational group with industrial investments in the battery and electronics industries. 

Victor is a director of Hong Kong Design Centre and PMQ Management Company Ltd. He is an honorary president of Federation of Hong Kong Industries as well as an advisor of its Design Council of Hong Kong. He is also an honorary professor at the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and an honorary member of the School Industry Advisory Committee on Design.

Victor was the chairman of the council of PolyU from 2004 to 2009, a member of the Executive Council of the HKSAR Government from 2005 to 2009, and the chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation from 2001 to 2007. He was also Chairman of Hong Kong Design Centre from 2007 to 03/2016.  He was presented the Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong in 1989 and the Industrialist of the Year Award in 2005. He also received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries in 2008. 

Victor graduated from the Institute of Design at Illinois Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in product design. He also holds an honorary doctorate in design from PolyU.
