This website is an archive of the impactful and inspirational work produced by the ID community before that transition.

László Moholy-Nagy opened the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1937, treating design as a discipline that was teachable, testable, and consequential. Nine decades on, its scope had widened from the things people use to the systems they depend on: hospitals, government agencies, classrooms, supply chains, digital platforms. Along the way, ID community members developed the published research, methods, and frameworks that designers rely on every day.

Chief among them is human-centered design: close attention to how people actually live, and advocacy for what that research reveals. It shaped designers who are comfortable with complexity and ambiguity: curious, rigorous, inclusive, and stubbornly optimistic about design's ability to change the systems that shape our lives.

To every one of them, who taught, studied, built, critiqued, and stayed late in the studio: thank you, and keep designing.

Transforming Educational Decision-Making

Translating Student Data Into Student Stories

At a sought-after charter school on the South Side of Chicago, educators juggle multiple platforms that track everything from test scores to social-emotional development.

To make sense of the data, teachers painstakingly copy and paste information from fifteen different platforms to manually create reports for each student. Each platform has its own dashboard, but none provides a unified view, consuming valuable time and leaving educators with fragmented insights.

This issue reflects a broader paradox in today’s data-rich educational landscape: while more student information is available than ever before, accessing and using it meaningfully remains a challenge.

But what if teachers could see the whole story of each student's journey at a glance?

This question inspired an innovative collaboration between the Institute of Design and the charter school to develop a groundbreaking student dashboard that redefines how educators interact with student data. Unlike traditional tools that focus solely on isolated academic metrics, this dashboard integrates academic performance, behavioral observations, and other key insights into a unified, intuitive interface, empowering educators to make more informed and effective decisions.

Designing for Real-World Impact

The project started with thorough research into teachers’ daily routines and challenges. Surveys and in-depth interviews revealed that educators didn’t just need easier access to data—they needed a tool to uncover patterns and relationships across diverse types of student information.

To create a flexible, user-centered solution, the design team applied and adapted several frameworks, including:

  • Agile Development: An iterative approach allowed the team to incorporate continuous feedback, ensuring the design responded to evolving educator needs.
  • Multi-level Requirements Framework: Inspired by Kim Erwin’s approach, this method aligned the dashboard’s contextual, core content, and user-needs levels, resulting in a cohesive design that addressed both immediate and long-term goals.

The resulting dashboard reflects this deeper understanding, featuring:

  • Customizable views tailored to diverse teaching styles and needs
  • Real-time data integration from multiple assessment platforms for seamless access
  • Meaningful connections between academic performance and behavioral insights revealed through visual patterns
  • Quick-access tools designed to fit effortlessly into everyday classroom workflows

Prototyping in Action

The ID team developed user-centered designs through iterative testing and refinement, incorporating feedback to refine features like seating configurations, subject overviews, and student-specific views.

Design Principles

The dashboard design is grounded in the core design principles of data quality, support tools for professional growth, and adaptable layouts that define the foundation of the dashboard design.

The key themes that emerged from the research are:

  • Data quality dictates the dashboard’s impact.
  • Dashboards should enhance educators’ professional growth.
  • Customizable layouts can allow for user-specific needs.

Beyond Numbers: A Holistic View of Student Success

The dashboard’s standout innovation is its ability to integrate behavioral data alongside academic metrics. Teachers can now see how behavioral patterns might impact academic performance, or how social dynamics affect classroom engagement—insights that were previously buried across disconnected systems.

Key features include:

  • Individual student profiles combining academic, behavioral, and social-emotional data
  • Trend analysis showing patterns over time
  • Early warning indicators for potential challenges
  • Customizable tracking for individual learning goals

The future of the Student Dashboard is centered on continuous improvement and broader impact. As we refine the prototypes based on educator feedback, the focus remains on ensuring the tool is intuitive, effective, and seamlessly integrated into daily teaching practices.
