In 2026, after nearly 90 years, the Institute of Design was folded into Illinois Tech's School of Design & Society.
This website is an archive of the impactful and inspirational work produced by the ID community before that transition.

László Moholy-Nagy opened the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1937, treating design as a discipline that was teachable, testable, and consequential. Nine decades on, its scope had widened from the things people use to the systems they depend on: hospitals, government agencies, classrooms, supply chains, digital platforms. Along the way, ID community members developed the published research, methods, and frameworks that designers rely on every day.

Chief among them is human-centered design: close attention to how people actually live, and advocacy for what that research reveals. It shaped designers who are comfortable with complexity and ambiguity: curious, rigorous, inclusive, and stubbornly optimistic about design's ability to change the systems that shape our lives.

To every one of them, who taught, studied, built, critiqued, and stayed late in the studio: thank you, and keep designing.

The Space Between: ID’s End of Year Show

EOYS opens May 13

May 6, 2022

For the first time, ID will present its longtime tradition, End of Year Show (EOYS) online and in-person.

Pre-pandemic, EOYS was in the form of an in-person exhibition and end-of-year celebration. But COVID-19 moved this engagement online. This year, we’re doing both:

Today we are living in the space of uncertainty and ambiguity—between the depths of the pandemic but not yet post-pandemic, between the “before times” and establishing a new normal. At ID, we learn to navigate The Space Between—between engineering and art, between problem and solution, between idea and innovation. It is in The Space Between that our opportunity to shape the future resides. Join us for ID’s 2022 End of Year Show (EOYS), an exhibition of student work from the 2021–22 school year. Friday, May 13 is opening night, where we’ll celebrate the accomplishments of ID's hardworking students with food and drink.

The 2022 EOYS show will open on Friday, May 13, 2020 at 6pm, online and in-person.

Register now to join us in-person, or check out eoys.design at the same time, when we will flip the switch from EOYS 2021 to EOYS 2022.

If you are unable to join in-person, don’t worry! We will host an Instagram Live Takeover on our channel @iitdesign from 6:45pm until 8pm. Five students—Parker Joyner, Yong Shan Lee, Rosanna Lederhausen, Emmanuella Ben-Eboh, and Adelyn Soetyono—will each share projects from the show from their own perspectives. You can be part of the action by sharing comments and reactions to the livestream. To tune in, just follow @iitdesign on Instagram starting at 6:45pm on Friday, May 13.

Be the first to see and learn about ID’s award-winning student work.
