Novan
Today, as digital distraction has become the default response to emotional discomfort, we offer a speculative design with a new approach: Novan. This wearable device would help users to process emotions rather than avoid them. By imagining how scientifically supported therapeutic techniques might become more portable and approachable, Novan uses emerging haptic technology from FluidReality to create an emotion regulation device that is suitable for the everyday person. The technology applies small electrical fields to control the movement of fluids, generating subtle and customizable tactile sensations against the skin. It could help users not only regulate emotions, but build long-term coping strategies that lead to less anxiety, greater resilience, and overall life satisfaction.
