In 2026, after nearly 90 years, the Institute of Design came under new management. This website is an archive of the impactful and inspirational work produced by the ID community before that transition.

László Moholy-Nagy opened the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1937, treating design as a discipline that was teachable, testable, and consequential. Nine decades on, its scope had widened from the things people use to the systems they depend on: hospitals, government agencies, classrooms, supply chains, digital platforms. Along the way, ID community members developed the published research, methods, and frameworks that designers rely on every day.

Chief among them is human-centered design: close attention to how people actually live, and advocacy for what that research reveals. It shaped designers who are comfortable with complexity and ambiguity: curious, rigorous, inclusive, and stubbornly optimistic about design's ability to change the systems that shape our lives.

To every one of them, who taught, studied, built, critiqued, and stayed late in the studio: thank you, and keep designing.

A virtual format makes the event more efficient and customizable for organizations.

Get to know our students while sharing information about your organization and the role of design within it. You also have the option to post open positions. Get to know our students and stay connected with other leaders.

This format builds on the successful elements of our past events:

  • Expanded roundtable conversations for each participating organization: We’ve multiplied our favorite roundtable discussions, providing each organization an opportunity to hold up to 3 roundtables on the day of their choice. Whether your organization is horoing or not - these roundtables are a great way to get to know ID talent and help our students stay connected to different industries.
  • Student interviews made easy: Traditional and informational interviews happen as best fits your schedule in the two weeks following the Confab. Respond to student applications and invite students to interview based on their resumes or your networking interactions.
  • Less than three hours of your time.

For our Fall 2021 event, all of our registration will happen exclusively on Handshake (links at top). There are a few things to note about registration:
